After the War, I was a Field Sales Representative for the Surrey & South London group of newspapers, selling advertising space to estate agents and property developers. I witnessed the creation of the large estate agency chains like Prudential Property Services with their ‘open cheque book’ policies when it came to advertising.
The demise of PPS and similar giants saw a new breed of independently owned estate agencies emerge and it was the largest of these that approached me in the early nineties to re-negotiate all their advertising with a re-newed stance of aggressive buying. I saved the group over £1 million in my first year.
When Peter Jones and Sandy McCartney heard of my buying feats they just had to have me – on board, that is. After a short spell of experience with a National Representation House in central London, I now find myself back in the role I enjoy the most – beating media owners at their own game.
